AGORA was a central spot in ancient Greek city-states. The literal meaning of this word is “gathering place” or “assembly”. The agora was the center of athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life of the city.
From 2 to 9 November, 2014, Kyiv will host the International Forum of the European Youth Parliament “Agora on Security Kyiv”, which will bring together 150 young people from different parts of Ukraine and across Europe aged 18 to 30 years to build a common vision of security policy in Europe. A common theme of the Forum is “Re:think Security – Hack Old Paradigms.” During the week, the Forum participants will work in nine working groups, each of them focusing on specific aspects of European security, including the following areas: finance, health, military, politics, governance, trade, energy, environment, cyber security and agriculture. As a result of the Forum a joint report of all working groups will be prepared in order to form a comprehensive vision of European security in all key areas.
Holding such Agora in Kyiv will draw additional attention of key decision-makers, as well as media‘s attention not only to the security questions, but also to the development of civic movement in Ukraine, non-formal education and the role of young people in our society. With the entire system of international economic, politic, cultural and military security changing rapidly, we find it crucial to make the youth‘s voice heard. We believe that young leaders, who will shape Europe in the nearest future, should have the opportunity to speak on what should be done to ensure the sustainable and secure development of all countries on the continent today.
It is also important for us to introduce young Ukrainians to participants from other countries, in order to foster dialogue, exchange of values, ideas and experience by holding in Kyiv one of the most important events for youth in Europe. By doing this, we aim to open Ukraine to talented young people coming from different countries and to make our country the source of innovative ideas for tackling the current European security challenges.
